How can I make a fake (real-looking) wedding cake?

by remodellearner

We want to serve slices from Costco sheet cakes (yuuum, and the price is right!) but want a pretty looking cake with a real top tier for us to cut into. The decorative cake would be just that, but it should look edible on the outside. Can I use purchased/homemade fondant to cover either boxes or cake pans? This is ideally to save $$, so if fondant is super expensive, what else could be used?
I like the styrofoam idea – where could I get the styrofoam “cake layers?” Thanks for the help!

    Marthastewart.com has some ideas about cake decoration:=&subStyleType=&layout=&catid=&navLevel=&site=weddings&dp=false

    You can make your own fondant:,,FOOD_9936_20407,00.html

    In fact, Jacques Torres has many great, fairly easy ideas for decorating with chocolate and sugar:

    Or for fancy decoration, what about edible flowers? Depending on what you use, you could even grow them yourself, and they’d be beautiful. you could even put some on your sheet cake, to make it match:

    Check out your local craft store for inexpensive, nicely shaped boxes or other bases- foam, maybe, to cover with fondant, or fake icing;

    Pretend icing ideas:

    Finally, I’d recommend that you not go too overboard with your artificial (mostly) cake. Tasteful, not tacky. And I definitely think that it would look much better to cover the base of your cake with the same covering, icing, fondant , whatever, that is on the edible part. And give the thing a practice run, if you have time.

    Good luck!

    many bakeries cover Styrofoam with frosting to use as examples of what their cakes will look like. the Styrofoam can be cut into any desired shape. the cheapest thing would be to make frosting with powdered sugar and shortening.Of course you’d want something tastier on the top tier!

    Use cardboard boxes and ice them like you would a cake with the same type of icing. Just get them in the shape you want ~ or get a hat box from Michaels and ice that. That would work too. Good luck.

    Michaels or any craft store for styrofoam. They also have the supplies to set it up like a tiered wedding cake. You can use cardboard too, but they styrofoam is cheap and already comes in the perfect sizes to make a fake cake.

    I made my own wedding cake with styrofoam. I had trouble with the fondant at first, but after I figured out that my fondant was too dry it was so easy! I covered 10 cakes in less than 2 hours. They look great, and they look real. If you want, you can use buttercream frosting instead of fondant. I think fondant looks better, and it is much easier to use. It may be more expensive, but I do think it is worth the bucks.
